Vols finish eighth at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate
Tennessee men’s golf finished 13 over par to finish in the No. 8 spot at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The Tennessee golf team traveled to Scottsdale this weekend to take on 11 other schools at Desert Mountain’s Outlaw course designed by Jack Nicklaus in a three-round event.
After the first round, freshman Rhys Nevin led the Volunteers individually and was tied for No. 15 his first two rounds at 1-under. Nevin shot a 1-under 71 in the first round with four birdies, and finished off the second round at even par.
Senior Juan Carlos Serrano struggled his first round and put up a 77, but he finished the second round with a 71 to put him tied for No. 35 after the first two rounds. Freshman Jake Meenhorst and junior Lorenzo Scalise both finished tied for 46th place after posted a 7-over for the two rounds. Nolan Ray finished in last for Tennessee individually at No. 49, shooting an 8-over at 152. Ray posted two birdies and an eagle in the first round for the Volunteers.
Tennessee as a team finished the first two rounds in eighth place after they shot a 298 in the first round and improved to shoot 290 in the second. This put the Vols at a 12-over score of 588 heading into the final round on Sunday.
Going into the final round, Michigan lead the 12-team pack shooting a 10-under 562. The Wolverines held a two-shot lead over Northwestern and Kansas who were tied for second. Michigan also had the leader in individual play going into the final round as Reed Hrynewich shot a 10-under 134 himself.
In the third and final round, Tennessee was paired with Washington State and Utah. The Vols finished with their lowest score over the whole tournament with a team total of a 1-over 289 and a tournament total of 877, 13 strokes over par. Tennessee finished seven strokes ahead of Utah and seven strokes behind Washington State in the No. 8 spot.
Nevin finished the highest out of all of the Vols at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate at No. 14 with an overall score of a 1-over 215. Scalise shot his first round under par for the tournament with a 1-under 71 to finish in 34th place. Meenhorst shot even par in the final round to finish with a 223 and in 38th place. Serrano, 43rd, and Ray, 45th, finished with a 225 and 226, respectively.
Michigan won the tournament after shooting a 13-under 851, and Hyrnewich finished with a 73 in the final round to make his overall tournament score 9-under. Northwestern finished with 11-under and Alabama with 7-under to round out the top three.
Next, Tennessee travels to Williamsburg, Virginia, to compete in the Kingsmill Intercollegiate. The tournament takes place from March 19-21.
