SEC names Gamecocks’ Wilson player of the year, Tigers’ Pingeton coach of the year
South Carolina’s A’ja Wilson repeated as SEC Player of the Year to headline the SEC’s postseason awards.
The SEC released its postseason awards on Tuesday. Most notably, South Carolina junior A’ja Wilson was named Player of the Year for the second consecutive year and Missouri’s Robin Pingeton was named Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers (21-9, 11-5 SEC) to a third-place conference finish.
Wilson was third in the conference with 17.4 points per game. She had double-digit scoring outings in all but two games this season and had eight double-doubles. Wilson averaged 7.6 rebounds per game and had two or more blocks in 20 of the Gamecocks’ games this season.
Pingeton’s Coach of the Year award marks the first time since 1990 the award has gone to Missouri’s head coach. Pingeton has maintained or increased Missouri’s overall record every year since her first season in 2010. Missouri led the conference in 3-point field goals en route to an 11-5 conference record that included wins over then-ranked teams Texas A&M, Kentucky and South Carolina after being picked to finish seventh in the SEC preseason poll.
LSU’s Raigyne Moncrief was named Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 3.5 steals per game, becoming just the second Lady Tigers player to win the award. Mississippi State’s Teaira McCowan was voted as the 6th Woman of the Year.
