The Tennessee women’s soccer team lost a close game, 2-1, to #2 Virginia in the Lady Vols’ first matchup of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic on Friday.

The Tennessee women’s soccer team lost a close game, 2-1, to #2 Virginia in the Lady Vols’ first matchup of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic on Friday.

Tennessee started off well as Hannah Wilkinson scored Tennessee’s lone goal in the 10th minute on Tennessee’s only shot on goal for the game. Wilkinson’s goal was a header off of a free kick by Kiah Allen from roughly five yards outside the box.

Virginia had its fair share of scoring chances, with one of their best chances coming in the 18th minute. The Lady Vols were called for a penalty in the box on a Virginia free kick, but the Lady Cavaliers’ Danielle Colaprico missed wide left on the ensuing penalty kick.

Virginia trailed at halftime 1-0 for the first time all season despite having an 11-3 shot advantage, thanks in part to excellent goaltending from Lady Vol keeper Jamie Simmons.

For the game, the Lady Cavaliers outshot Tennessee 23-10. After trailing for the first time all season, Virginia’s Kristen McNabb equalized with a strike from the left side of the box that found its way just inside the right post in the 50th minute.

Shortly after, Colaprico redeemed her penalty miss with the go-ahead goal that also went from the left side of the box to the right side of the goal. Virginia held on to improve their record to 6-0, while Tennessee dropped to 3-3 on the season.

The Lady Vols next game is Thursday, September 18th, at 7 p.m. at Texas A&M.
