Tennessee men’s basketball MVP of the week: Robert Hubbs III
While it was a rough week for Tennessee basketball, senior guard Robert Hobbs III turned in two strong performances against Vanderbilt and South Carolina.
Tennessee saw their NCAA Tournament hopes slip away this week, losing to both Vanderbilt (16-13, 9-7 SEC) and South Carolina. On Wednesday night, the Vols fell to the Commodores 67-56 before losing to the Gamecocks 82-55 on Saturday afternoon in Columbia.
There weren’t many bright spots for Tennessee basketball this week, but senior guard Robert Hubbs III turned in two strong performances.
On Wednesday night against Vanderbilt, Hubbs became the 48th Vol in program history to score 1,000 points in their career. He reached the milestone when he knocked down a free throw in the second half. The free throw brought Tennessee within three points, the closest the Vols had been to the Commodores since the opening minutes of the game.
In the first half of that game, Hubbs got off to a slow start by shooting just 1-of-4 from the field for only four points. He bounced back in the second half, scoring 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Hubbs totaled 16 points, three rebounds and two assists on the evening.
Against the SEC’s top-rated defense in South Carolina, Hubbs was the only Vol to finish in double figures. He finished with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field against the Gamecocks, adding a single rebound and steal. It was a rough night for the team, but Hubbs continued his solid play on both the week and the season.
Tennessee (15-14, 7-8 SEC) returns to action on Wednesday night against LSU in Baton Rouge. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
