Week seven SEC football reactions

Much of the talk around the SEC headed into week seven was of the impact canceling the Florida-LSU matchup could have. Once that issue was taken care of, it was back to football.

The SEC only featured four conference clashes this week, but there was no shortage of action.

Unless you’re Tennessee.

Let’s get to some reactions, shall we?

Alabama is better than we thought (if that’s possible)

Going undefeated is never easy no matter who you are. Unless, of course, you happen to be the Alabama Crimson Tide. With the exception of their game against Ole Miss, the Crimson Tide have cruised to a 7-0 record thus far. Alabama has played four conference games this season and beaten those teams by a combined 91 points.

The largest margin of victory came against none other than the up-and-coming Tennessee Volunteers. A 49-10 bludgeoning of the Vols proved why Alabama is the greatest team in the country. Sure, Tennessee had 16 injuries as a team. You still don’t lose by 39 points in Neyland Stadium as the No. 9 team in the nation unless your opponent is coached by Nick Saban and (sorry Vol fans) Lane Kiffin. If there is a weakness, they will find it, exploit it, throw salt on the wound and repeat as necessary.

Three players rushed for over 90 yards for the Crimson Tide. Tennessee, on the other hand, had 32 rushing yards as a team. That is a credit to Alabama’s talent on both sides of the ball, as well as all-time great coaching.

Looking ahead to next week, a point spread has not been released for the Alabama-Texas A&M matchup, but it’s a safe bet to pick Alabama to cover.

Georgia is Bad

Remember Nick Chubb? Yeah, the one who rushed for 222 yards against North Carolina? He rushed for 40 yards against Vanderbilt. That’s it.

Since his 2016 debut against the Tar Heels, Chubb has only mustered 364 rushing yards in six performances. Granted, he only saw one snap against Tennessee due to injury, but Chubb has put up only one 100-plus-yard rushing performance since the season opener. This is a player that collected 745 yards in five games last season before being sidelined due to injury.

An over-reliance on boy-wonder Jacob Eason has made the Bulldogs a one-dimensional team. It ultimately cost a win at home against the laughing stock of the SEC that is the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Kirby Smart is only in his first year as head coach, so there’s no need to bring out the pitchforks. With talent like he has, however, there is cause for concern.

The SEC did the right thing

Hurricane Matthew delayed the ability for Florida to play its Oct. 8 matchup against LSU, which is understandable. A cancellation would have been unacceptable. Had the game not been rescheduled, it would have been a disaster.

Spoiler: None of them looked good for the SEC.

After the Gators postponed their meeting with the Tigers, there was plenty of speculation as to whether the game would be made up at all. Thankfully for the conference and for all of college football, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey stepped in and made sure the game happened.

The SEC stated in a press release that neither program would have been eligible for the SEC Championship game if the game went unplayed. Well done, Sankey. Well done, SEC.

The game between Florida and LSU is now set for Nov. 19 in Baton Rouge.
