Top SEC performers from Week Two

In a mostly quiet week two around the SEC, there were still big performances on Saturday to highlight.

Most teams in the SEC played cupcakes this week, so it’s hard to gauge how well each team performed. But hey, playing cupcakes gives players a chance to shine. Here are the best performances in the SEC from week two of the college football season:

Austin Allen, Arkansas QB

Double overtime and 41 points scored is what it took for Arkansas to defeat No. 15 TCU on the road. The Razorbacks have Austin Allen to thank for getting them there. Allen had arguably the best performance in the entire conference in week two, posting 223 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and adding a touchdown on the ground. He also caught (yes, caught) a two-point conversion pass to tie the game and force overtime.

Antonio Callaway, Florida WR

The Florida Gators routed the Kentucky Wildcats 45-7 on Saturday behind an all-around impressive performance from the team. However, Callaway was particularly impressive, averaging 25.8 yards per catch, including a 78-yard touchdown to put Florida up by 14 in the first quarter. He finished with five receptions for 129 yards on the day.

Drew Lock, Missouri QB

Playing “cupcake teams” allows players to pad their stats. The Tigers’ quarterback took full advantage of that opportunity in week two, passing for an astronomical 450 yards and five touchdowns in a 61-21 rout of Eastern Michigan. Perhaps Lock’s performance in this game can give him and his team some added confidence heading into next week, where they will have to face a much better team in the No. 16 Georgia Bulldogs.

Ralph Webb, Vanderbilt RB

Despite a collapse in week one, Vanderbilt was able to bounce back and beat Middle Tennessee 47-24 behind an incredible performance from tailback Ralph Webb. Two touchdowns and a career-high 211 yards from Webb led the Commodores to an impressive victory. Perhaps the most eye-opening statistic from Webb, was his astounding 7.3 yards per carry. Webb will have to have these kinds of numbers every week if they want to contend in the SEC.

Honorable Mention: Trevor Knight, Texas A&M QB

Trevor Knight’s performance against the Prairie View Panthers was nothing to scoff at. He threw for 344 yards, three scores through the air and one on the ground while dismantling Prairie View 67-0. However, given Knight’s impressive outing against UCLA in week one and the fact that A&M was playing a FCS team this week, this stat line was not enough to make the top performers list. Aggies fans needn’t worry though. If Knight puts up performances like this against SEC foes, he’ll make an appearance on the list.
