Preview: Ice skating rink returning to Market Square

In downtown Knoxville, Market Square will be opening there holiday ice rink on Nov. 29 through Jan. 5.

As temperatures are dropping, downtown Knoxville is preparing for the winter holidays. Market Square is setting down 160,000 pounds of ice, along with setting up lights.

Market Square is setting up its holiday ice skating rink for the 2019-2020 holiday season. The rink will be open from Nov. 29 through Jan. 5. Times will vary closer to Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.

Knoxville student, Mary Grace Isaacs, says she is excited to go check out the fun.

“I can’t wait for the rink to be open,” Isaacs said. “My friends and I love coming down to Market Square every season, but winter is just much more fun since they’ve been doing the ice skating.”

Admissions cost $11 for adults and $8 for children 12 & under. Season passes are also available for adults for $50, and $35 for children 12 & under. These prices include the entry fee as well as skate rentals and unlimited time on the ice.

The event is hosted by organizations such as Regal Cinemas, Home Federal Bank and more.

Sponsor from Regal Cinemas, Andy Rogers, said this event is great for families.

“When Regal got asked to sponsor, I got excited,” Rogers said. “I have two kids of my own so being able to take them downtown and do something as a family, that I’ve had a hand in, means a lot to me.”

There are also a variety of special events during the holidays.

These special events and include skating with the Ice Bears, Decade theme night, and Christmas sweater night. More events can be found on the Knoxville events page.
