Preview: Affordable, family-friendly holiday events in Knoxville for UT students

The holiday season is full of fun, affordable events for UT students before Winter break.

The winter holiday season is quickly approaching the University of Tennessee, Knoxville community. Knoxville hosts some annual traditions, activities and fun for the community and UT students, faculty and staff. 

Christmas Fair

The annual Christmas Fair will take place in the Knoxville Expo Center from Nov. 8 to Nov. 10. For $5, participants can enjoy local and regional vendors’ crafts, gifts and more. Specific hours and the address for the event are listed on their website. 

A Christmas Carol at Clarence Brown Theatre

A Christmas Carol will be performed at Clarence Brown Theatre from Nov. 27 to Dec. 21. Tickets are $5 for students that present a valid UT ID. Showtimes and dates can be seen here

Holidays on Ice

Just in time for winter, Market Square will transform into an icy wonderland called Holidays on Ice, which will take place from Nov. 29 to Jan. 5. There will be an open-aired ice skating rink in Market Square for the public to enjoy. The rink’s operating hours and prices are listed on the Holidays on Ice’s website. There are also themed nights to add to the fun. 

The Regal Celebration of Lights

The Regal Celebration of Lights will happen on Nov. 29 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is free to attend the celebration, located in Market Square and Krutch Park. There is a tree lighting, carols, bands, marshmallow roasting and other activities for family and friends. 

WDVX Holiday Ho Ho Hoedown

There will be live music on the Market Square stage on Nov. 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the WDVX Holiday Ho Ho Hoedown. Holiday jazz music from the 1920s to the 1930s will be performed free of charge. The performance from last year is available on Vimeo.

Winter Chorale Concert

A free Winter Chorale Concert will take place on Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Building. The concert will feature the entire choral ensemble of the School of Music. The School of Music encourages viewers to arrive early in order to claim a seat. The concert is an annual tradition at UT and for UT students and staff. 

The Market Square Holiday Market

The Market Square Holiday Market will be held every Saturday from Dec. 7 to Dec. 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Market Square. The market is free to attend with local vendors and food. The Holiday Market is a yearly event that allows artisans, farmers, food trucks and food producers to show off their skill and merchandise. 

It’s a Wonderful Life at the Tennessee Theatre

The Tennessee Theatre is presenting “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the Tennessee Theatre Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. General admission is free and first come first serve. This year is particularly special as Knoxville TVA Credit Union celebrates its 85 year anniversary.
