Volunteers beat the Gamecocks in SEC dual meet

The Tennessee Men and Women Swim and Dive teams had a dominant outing in their dual meet at South Carolina last Friday.

The Tennessee Volunteers swim team traveled to South Carolina for a dual meet last week.

The Vols pulled out an SEC win against the Gamecocks with the men taking 14-of-16 events. The women secured 13-of-16.

This meet was the first time the Gamecocks and Volunteers have competed since Jan. 6, 2017 when the Tennessee men won by 78 points and the women by 12.

The meet was held in a long course pool rather than short course, meaning each race was swam in a 50-meter length pool.

The Lady Vols started off the meet by winning the first swimming event, the 400 Meter Medley Relay. Tennessee’s Meghan Small, Alexis Yager, Erika Brown and Stanzi Moseley swam a 4:16:73 in the relay.

The Lady Vols kept a consistent winning streak throughout the 400 Medley Relay, 800 Meter Freestyle and 200 Meter Freestyle until they came across a loss in the 100 Meter Backstroke trailing by .02.24 seconds.

Swimmer Abby Samansky led the women in both the 200 Meter Freestyle with a time of 2:06:41 and the 100 Meter Freestyle with a time of 58.58.

“Abby had a great meet and we were really excited to bring her and allow her to compete in her first SEC dual meet,” Tennessee coach Ashley Jahn said. “She did a great job and was really composed in both races.”

Tennessee’s men continued to prove why they are ranked 16th in the country.

The men came out on top with Taylor Abbott coming in first place in the 800 Meter Freestyle and 400 Meter Freestyle and Alec Connolly placing first in the 50 Meter Freestyle and 100 Meter Freestyle.

Diver Grace Cable came to show out again this week scoring a 282.45 in the Women’s One-Meter event and a 324.60 in the Three Meter, putting her in first place for both events.

As for the men, diver William Hallam came out in first place in both the One and Three Meter events scoring a 342.53 and a 362.03.

“Will had two strong event wins,” Dave Parrington, head diving coach, said. “I’m pleased with his strength and focus this early in the season.”

The Volunteers will continue this week on the road against the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan in a double dual meet on Oct. 18 and Oct. 19.
