Around the SEC: Women’s Basketball Weekly Recap

Which SEC teams swapped places in the Top 25 falling their contest Sunday? Check out what happened in this week’s action of SEC women’s basketball.

Tennessee’s fourth-quarter collapse on Sunday knocks them out of the Top 25

The Lady Vols possessed the lead the majority of the game, and even led by as many as 11. Then in the final quarter, Tennessee totaled five points and failed to make a field goal over the final eight minutes of the game, shooting only 2-of-11 over the last period. The Aggies’ ability to dominate the glass sparked the comeback effort and they recorded 15 offensive rebounds in the game. Both the go-ahead and game-tying scores came off second chance opportunities.

The loss dropped the Lady Vols out of Monday’s AP Top 25. In addition, the loss moved them out of the top four in the conference, a position which would ensure a bye in the SEC Tournament. The Aggies are now sitting at No. 23 in the poll after being unranked the previous week.

No. 6 South Carolina and No. 3 Mississippi State enjoy dominant weeks

At the top of the SEC, it continues to be a two-team race and both are dominating the rest of the conference. While Mississippi State beat both Ole Miss and Vanderbilt this week, South Carolina handled Auburn in its lone game of the week. The three games were won by a combined 86 points.

The Bulldogs obliterated last place Vanderbilt 86-41 before taking care of Ole Miss 66-44 despite with leading scorer Victoria Vivians going 3-of-21 from the field.

As for South Carolina, a 60-41 home victory was its final game before a showdown at No. 1 Connecticut on Monday in an attempt to end the winning streak at 99. Readers, have a moment of silence for the Lady Gamecocks. They fell to the Huskies on Monday, and it’s a shame such a talented program has to play the role of victim number 100.
