Paula Deen, celebrity chef and cooking show television host, came to Knoxville Wholesale Furniture for a book signing as well as photos with her fans on Saturday Nov. 7 from 12-2 p.m.

Deen is on a nationwide tour promoting her new book, “Paula Deen Cuts the Fat”, which includes recipes such as her fried green tomatoes, fried chicken and fried catfish. The book takes these southern classics and presents them with lighter, healthier options.

According to the 2014 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 29.1 million people in the U.S. have type 2 diabetes.

Deen mentions in her blog that she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She wrote this book as a way of keeping the flavor of her Southern recipes while also cutting the fat, adding more vegetables to her recipes. The book promotes better eating habits for not just those suffering from type 2 diabetes, but to anyone trying to live a healthier lifestyle.

“Always keep in mind that you can enjoy good cookin’ and eatin’ and still be healthy—and I’m living proof of that!” she said in her blog  about her new book.

Deen signed autographs, books and took pictures for all of the dedicated fans waiting in line. She also had a line of furniture that was sold in the store. The first fifty fans to buy furniture from her collection got a free book.

The book also features recipes from Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen in Pigeon Forge, which opened on April 27. A couple of these recipes are her macaroni and cheese and peach cobbler.

She had self-published “The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cooking” and “The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cooking 2” in 1995 where both books had recipes of Deen’s traditional Southern recipes.

It’s been eight years since her last book publication.

In April of 2007, she also published her memoir, “It Ain’t All About the Cookin'”.

Deen recently competed on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” on Sept. 2. She participated with professional dancer Louis van Amstel. They finished in 9th place after the sixth week of being on the show.
