The University of Tennessee’s President, Joe DiPietro, announced his retirement via email today.

DiPietro became the 25th president of the university in January 2011.

He said that he feels the university is currently in a position of strength and stability.

“We all reach points in our lives and careers when the timing just feels right,” DiPietro said. “I knew the timing was right in 2011 when I accepted the responsibility of serving as president of this great institution—and what an incredible experience it’s been.”

The UT Board of Trustees will be meeting soon to discuss the next steps for the university.

“I look forward to spending the next few months visiting with and celebrating with you,” DiPietro said. “It is the people who make up the University of Tennessee that I will miss most.”

DiPietro included a video at the end of his email to share his departure with the UT system. In his video, he talks about all the transition going on around the state of Tennessee. He said that it’s a really great time for anyone to step into this position.

DiPietro’s family has made sacrifices while he’s been an administrator.

“It’s time focus on them,” DiPietro said.

DiPietro’s last day will be Nov. 21. He will officially retire Feb. 14, 2019.
