Shaw nets hat trick, leads Vols to 3-1 win against Kentucky
Tennessee picks up another SEC road victory with goalkeeper Yanez nearly holding a seventh solo shutout
The No. 12 Tennessee Volunteers (9-1-1) netted a 3-1 win against the Kentucky Wildcats (4-9-0) on Friday in Lexington.
The Vols wore down the Kentucky defense with a ferocious attack, registering 19 shots.
Following a stalemate, Tennessee took the lead late in the first half when Bunny Shaw returned a rebound shot for the score. The goal marked Shaw’s fifth of the season. Her sixth and seventh scores came on a header and a penalty kick, respectively, to give the Jamaica native a hat trick.
The Vols held the Wildcats scoreless until the 35 minutes in to the second half.
In 11 games played this year, Tennessee has only given up four goals, two of which came against South Carolina. Shae Yanez, who nearly recorded her seventh solo shutout of the season, did not register a save against the Cats.
Before giving up a goal against Kentucky, Yanez stood first in the SEC with a .300 goals against average as well as a .903 save percentage.
Up next, Tennessee looks for its third SEC road victory when it takes on the Gators in Gainesville, Florida on Oct. 4. First touch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m, and the game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
