Tennessee starts well in Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship
Lady Vols finish fourth on the first day of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.
The Tennessee women’s golf team wrapped up its first day of action on Monday at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship tournament.
The Lady Vols finished 4th out of 17 teams through the first day, while SEC foe Kentucky sits in ninth place. Ole Miss, meanwhile, is tied with Coastal Carolina for 11th place.
Thanks to Hurricane Florence, the conditions were not perfect for the start of the tournament.
Tennessee didn’t seem to be affected, however, as it finished the day with 590 total points, five strokes short of first place.
Judi Pavon, who is now in her 19th season as Tennessee’s head coach, believes familiarity with the course gives the Vols an edge.
“We know Cherokee really well,” she said Monday. “I think that will be a good advantage for us.”
Mikayla Bardwell leads the team thus far, as she sits even with par through the first two rounds.
Coming out of a 73-81-2 campaign last season, this start seems to be a welcome one for a Tennessee team attempting to rebound.
The final round kicked off on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m., and updates for the last day of play will be provided following the match.
