Tennessee natives dominate the American Music Awards
On Sunday, Nov. 24 the 41st American Music Awards were held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The award ceremony was hosted by music artist Pitbull and included stars such as Jennifer Hudson, Marc Anthony, Ciara, Heidi Klum and many more.
Boy band One Direction won for Favorite Band and beat out Imagine Dragons and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Ariana Grande won for New Artist of the Year but in the end Tennessee natives, Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift won the most awards for the night.
Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift won 3 AMA’s, outnumbering everyone. Taylor Swift trumped over Justin Timberlake for Artist of the Year.
The highlights of the show include Rihanna receiving the Icon award and performing her hit single “Diamonds” and Katy Perry’s Japanese themed opening performance of her new single “Unconditionally”.
The show included tributes such as TLC performing their 90’s hit “Waterfalls” with rapper Lil’ Mama and Jennifer Lopez doing a tribute performance to Cuban performer Celia Cruz.
Lady Gaga performed her newest single “Do What You Want” with R&B singer R. Kelly. Her performance appeared to be inspired by the hit show Scandal with R. Kelly playing the President and Lady Gaga playing the mistress.
Other performances included One Direction, Ariana Grande and Kendrick Lamar. Miley Cyrus helped close out the show with her performance of her hit single “Wrecked Ball” while wearing a bikini outfit with a singing cat graphic in the background. Watch the performance by clicking here.
