The Volunteer Creed is something that Knoxvillans might know by heart. “One that bearers a torch, shadoweth oneself to give light to others.”
The University of Tennessee has long prided itself on what it means to be a volunteer. Being a Vol is not like being a Bulldog or a Gator. It means something different.
Historically, the university named their mascot after Tennessee’s state nickname, The Volunteer State. This name is accredited to men in Tennessee’s willingness to aid in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War as well as Davy Crockett and the Alamo. The name, Volunteer State already means so much and UT continues to add to it.
“So I’m excited about putting a stake in the ground and saying Tennessee is going to make a difference in this world. I came back to Tennessee because this place has always stirred my heart because of the whole idea of what it means to be a Volunteer,” UT Chancellor Donde Plowman said. “I’ve always believed that leadership is the willingness to act and step forward, and that’s what it means to be a Volunteer.”
Serving With Intention, Not for Attention
TEDxUTK is hosting their final salon, Serving With Intention, Not for Attention on Nov. 9 and it is all about service and volunteering. As we rush into the season of service and giving, the organizers behind the salon would like to share what it means to volunteer.
The salon will include a panel of speakers from VOLbreaks and the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. TEDxUTK hopes to facilitate meaningful and intimate discussion through questions that facilitate the event. Questions such as, “Are people really aware of how impactful their projects are to their community?” and “Are they passionate about their service and dedicate themselves to it 100%. If not, why is there a disconnect?”
The salon looks to determine the true impacts and intentions behind community and service. In addition, they plan to discover why there is such an emphasis on service.
The TEDxUTK salon is free and will be hosted virtually as to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions. This event requires prior registration. The event will begin at 6 p.m on Nov.9.
