Tennessee volleyball traveled to Washington D.C. to play in the George Washington Invitational this weekend, coming away with two straight-set wins and an overall record of 2-1.

The Vols (9-3) opened up the weekend with a 3-0 loss (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) to Northern Illinois on Friday. Freshman Tessa Grubbs had yet another strong showing, as she led the way with 12 kills, her seventh time leading the team in kills this season. Junior Britney Vallez had 10 digs, leading Tennessee for the first time in her career.

Saturday brought a pair of crucial shutout victories for the Vols, kicking the day off with a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-19, 25-13) over James Madison University. Grubbs once again had a team-leading outing with 13 kills, while senior Bridgette Villano had 13 digs in the match.

Later that night, Tennessee won another 3-0 shutout match, this time against the host George Washington (25-22, 25-17, 27-25) to close out the tournament. Three different players had double-digit kills for the Vols (Erica Treiber 14, Grubbs 12 and Bri Holmes 10).

Tennessee will travel back to Knoxville to start SEC play, taking on Mississippi State on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. ET.
