Tennessee volleyball entered the Western Michigan Tournament with a 5-1 record, its second-consecutive strong start to a season after a string of down years.

The Vols kicked the weekend off with an impressive 3-1 win (25-13, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23) over host Western Michigan. Bri Holmes led the way with a season-high 21 kills, while setter Sedona Hansen recorded 56 assists. There was an additional reason to celebrate after the early Saturday contest. Defensive specialist Bridgette Villano became the 14th player in program history to record 1,000 digs.

Later in the day, Tennessee again won a match 3-1, this time over Milwaukee (25-16, 24-26, 25-7, 25-21). Freshman Tessa Grubbs finished with a career-high 16 kills, while Hansen again impressed as the team’s play creator, recording 40 assists.

On Sunday, the Vols faced the Xavier Musketeers. Despite a balanced team performance with three players recording double-digit kills (Grubbs 15, Erica Treiber 11, Holmes 10), Tennessee fell to Xavier 3-1 (23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21).

The Vols will partake in the George Washington Tournament next week, where they’ll take on NIU (Sept. 16), James Madison (Sept. 17) and the host Colonials (Sept. 17).
