A German cooking demonstration was performed by students at the International House on Tuesday Oct. 28.  A unique aspect in the demonstration is that it allowed the guests to participate in the creation and preparation of an authentic German meal.

A few people who worked at the International House aided the head demonstrator, Jan-Benedikt Jagusch, in preparing an easy to assemble meal.

“Meatballs and potato salads differ in ingredients depending on what part of Germany you are in,” said Jagusch. “For today, it will be a Berlin style of meatball and potato salad.”

Soon after history was given to the attendees, they were invited to come to the prep table and start molding the meatballs. A handful of pre-mixed meat was mixed with various added ingredients, such as onions and eggs, to form the authentic meatballs.

The third and final step came when participants had to flatten the meatballs slightly on the cooking pan. Once the meatballs were made the rest of the meal came together with the potato salad.

To Jagusch, the meal was almost an authentic representation of home.

“It’s really good but it doesn’t beat momma’s meatballs,” said Jagusch.
