A Trip to Bountiful opened at the Clarence Brown Theatre Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

A Trip to Bountiful, directed by Kate Buckley, is about an older woman named Carrie Watts who lives with her son Ludie and his wife Jessie Mae Watts. Carrie, who longs to return back to her hometown Bountiful, slips away from her son’s home with her pension check and journeys back to Bountiful. The trips proves to be not only heart-breaking, but well needed.

Katie Holvey, a member of UT’s Parents Association, came to the preview Feb. 20 with her daughter. Holvey, who had  seen previous productions at the CBT, was excited for the show.

“I expect for it to entertain me,” said Holvey. “My past experiences here were amazing.”

A Trip to Bountiful is a play that invokes a range of emotions from laughter to annoyance and eventually hope. Each character, whether it was smart mouthed Jessie Mae, the loyal son Ludie or the head strong Carrie; related to everyone.

During the curtain call, Carrie Watts, played by Carol Mayo Jenkins, was greeted with a standing ovation for her performance.

Krista Lucas, a freshman at UT, attended the preview for her Theater 100 class. Lucas thought Carrie was similar to a college student.

“Even if you can gain a lot of good from leaving home,” said Lucas. “Home never really leaves you. I really wanted her [Carrie] to get back to Bountiful.”

The show will continue to run until March 9. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here or at the Central Ticket Office in the University Center.
