5 Things to Know This Week (1/19-1/26)
NO CLASS MONDAY
Classes will not meet Monday, Jan. 20 in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Nearly 500 UT students honored King on Saturday by volunteering with various service projects around Knoxville. A celebration will be held Monday at the Black Cultural Center. More details here.
STRONG HALL RENOVATION AND EXPANSION BEGINS
Construction work to turn UT’s vacant Sophronia Strong Hall into a science class and laboratory facility has begun. UT officials say the two-year, $114 million project will address the university’s need for general class and lab space. The new nine-story, 268,000-square-foot building will house anthropology, earth and planetary sciences departments and lab space for the general biology and chemistry departments.
SGA ELECTIONS INTEREST MEETING
Students interested in running for student government positions should attend the Student Government Association elections interest meeting Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Shiloh Room of the University Center. Students not interested in government positions can still contribute to the political conversation by tweeting what they think the university needs with the hashtag #VolsNeed.
WE BACK PAT GAME
The Lady Vols will face Florida Thursday, Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. The game will honor Lady Vols’ head coach emeritus Pat Summitt. Pat Summitt Vol Memories T-shirts will be sold at the game and are available online in advance here.
CLEAN OUT YOUR INBOX WEEK
Set aside time this week to take part in the 7th annual International Clean Out Your Inbox Week. This would be a great time to get rid of all the old Student@Tennessee emails you never deleted or those somewhat desperate messages from the kid in your class who asked for an entire semester’s worth of notes last fall.
