Let’s talk about it.

Sexual Empowerment and Awareness at Tennessee will be holding a two day preview for the return of Sex Week on Tuesday, Oct 8 and Wednesday, Oct. 9. The preview will consist of two interactive panels and on Pedestrian Walkway there will be several resources available to students through the help of Planned Parenthood, the East TN Sexual Assault Center and the Knox County Health Department from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. both days.

“We hope the preview will give a taste of what they can expect during Sex Week,” said Jacob Clark, co-founder of UT Sex Week and senior at the University of Tennessee. “We want more students involved in the process, and we hope the Fall Preview can encourage students to remain connected to Sex Week. We also think it is important to continue conversations about gender and sexuality throughout the year. Our fundamental goal is to begin cultural change, and that can only be accomplished with frequent discussion.”

The first event, titled “Falling Into Your Sexuality Panel,” will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the UC Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The interactive panel will include faculty, local health professionals, and student representatives.  Dr. Hulsey the new Chancellor’s Honors Program director, Tory Mills from Planned Parenthood, nurse practitioner Anita Blatnik, and John Tirro, a minister from Tyson House are the panel representatives. The panel will discuss a series of prepared questions and topics followed by an anonymous, audience-driven Q&A session over a wide array of topics such as sexual identity, religion, as well as sex and the college experience.

The second event, “Sex in the Dark” will be held on Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the UC Auditorium. Health professionals and experts will monitor a student driven discussion in a welcome and safe environment. Students will be able to ask and answer questions in the comfort of the dark via glowsticks.

While the Fall Preview is only two events, Sex Week 2014 will have over thirty events.

“We’re trying to bring back a lot of our events from last years events, like the Drag show, of course,” said Kevin Brown, SEAT member and junior at UT. “We plan on having a variety of events- discussions, panels, movies, audience driven events- covering a wide variety of topics, such as sexual orientation, sex in religion, LGBTQ rights, hook up culture, sexual assault awareness and prevention, and many more.”

Sex Week 2014 is set for March 2-7.
