Tennessee men's golf wins on two fronts at the Grove

The Tennessee Volunteers swept the competition at the Intercollegiate at the Grove tournament this week.

The tournament was cut down to only two rounds due to inclement weather Oct. 7, but the less than stellar conditions did not seem to bother the Vols in the slightest. The Vols posted a new 36-hole tournament record score of 7-under-par, securing their first win of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Vols held a commanding eight-stroke lead over the field after carding a team score of 4-under-par in the first round of play. Be the end of round two, Tennessee extended that lead out to 16 strokes. Of the 14 teams and 88 players present, the Vols were the only team to shoot under par for the tournament.

Not only did the Vols take home the team tournament title, but Knoxville native Tyler Johnson hit some milestones of his own. He won his first career individual tournament with a 36-hole tournament record score of 6-under-par.

“I just had pure excitement,” Johnson said. “I never imagined myself winning here, especially this week playing in an individual spot.”

Tennessee had a season-high in the number of golfers placing in the top-25. Nine out of the 10 players participating finished in that group. In addition, the Vols set another season-high with five golfers placing in the top-10 for the tournament. Tennessee was also the only team in the tournament to have multiple players finish under par with four.

Volunteer head coach Brennan Webb was pleased with his team’s performance.

“It just shows the depth of our squad, which we know is a strength of ours,” Webb said.

With two back to back tournaments coming up at East Tennessee State and Georgia Tech, the Vols are looking to build on the hot streak.
