Irish singing group wows Tennessee Theatre audience

Kilts, bagpipes and drinking songs are not native to Tennessee, but that didn’t stop locals from filling seats to see Celtic Thunder. The Irish singing group took the stage of the Tennessee Theater by storm Tuesday night promoting their Mythology album.

Celtic Thunder is a group of six Irish men who perform around the world singing traditional Irish music, their own songs and even current songs. The group originated in 2007 and has performed many places and for many people, including Barack Obama, since then.

The show featured group numbers and solos performed by the men accompanied by pipes, the cello, a violin, a harp, guitar, drums and piano. Instead of a traditional concert, the show was more like a theatrical performance that had fans laughing out loud. The men seemed to enjoy interacting with the crowd by asking questions and spent time after the show signing autographs and talking with fans.

Catherine Louk, UT senior, has been an avid Celtic Thunder fan since high school.

“The show was amazing,”said Louk. “Hands down incredible.  Not only did I get to enjoy a concert of one of my favorite bands for $10, I also was able to meet and greet with Celtic Thunder afterwards and that was a huge surprise.  I also loved watching other members in the audience with huge smiles on their faces the whole evening.”

The show included many songs from the Mythology album, rock and roll songs as well as country songs and ended with a powerful rendition of their popular song, “Ireland’s Call.”
