2014 Oscars host breaks selfie world record

Ellen DeGeneres, host of the 2014 Academy Awards, broke a world record when her star-studded selfie was retweeted over 2.7 million times.
Although this year’s award show may have featured some of the tightest races in recent Oscar history, a single picture is generating all of the news.
DeGeneres’s selfie, which included nominees Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lawrence and several more, was the first tweet to receive more than 1 million retweets in the first night alone.
The now infamous picture was also responsible for a Twitter crash, which led the Academy’s official Twitter page to respond with, “sorry, our bad.”
Prior to these awards, President Barak Obama’s 2012 reelection tweet, “4 more years,” held the record with 800,000 retweets.
DeGeneres greatly surpassed this record and many other expectations with her hosting of the night’s event.
Musical performances included Idina Menzel’s “Let it Go” from Disney’s Frozen and Bette Midler’s delivery of “Wind Beneath My Wings.”
The Oscars brought groundbreaking awards for Directors Steve McQueen and Alfonso Cuaron. “12 Years a Slave,” directed by McQueen, is the first film directed by an African-American filmmaker to win best picture. Cuaron is the first Latino filmmaker to take best director.
