Women’s Media Group makes their debut on campus this semester as they kick off their new organization.

“We started the Women’s Media Group to empower women and really develop their careers in the media industry,”  president and founder Elyssia Gaffney said.

Gaffney recognized the lack of an organization for women in the media on campus and decided to change that.

“I’m a journalism major, so I felt I should reach out to my fellow female journalism majors… get them together and see what we can do,” she said.

The startup organization has begun to get its feet wet on campus, aiming to pull in members of all genders and majors. The group welcomes everyone to join their efforts to empower women in the media.

“We’re at the beginning stage right now but we have a lot of things under works and we are trying to get our membership population up. We are looking for… people who are really passionate about our cause,”Gaffney said.

Vice president Beverly Banks expressed her enthusiasm for the group.

“I’m really excited for the Women’s Media Group this year because this is a new organization on campus that I feel will be really effective in building community for women in the media in the College of Communications and Information, and with all other colleges on campus,” she said.

In their efforts of empowering women, the group promotes the values of modern day feminism. They address feminist issues and shed light upon societal oversights.

Gaffney spoke on the feminist foundation of the organization.

“Feminism is simply the socio-economic equality of the sexes and that’s really what we are promoting. We are just doing it from a media angle and making sure everyone has a voice…. Anyone can be a feminist,” she said.

The group holds meetings every other Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Humanities and Social Science building, room 70.
