Opinion: “Dumb and Dumber To” lives up to its name

On Nov. 14, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels returned to share the big screen once again as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne in “Dumb and Dumber To”, the long-awaited sequel to the Farrelly Brothers classic “Dumb and Dumber.” But if you are hoping for a bit more than just a rehashing of old jokes, then I’m afraid that you will be slightly disappointed.
For the past 20 years, Lloyd has been institutionalized while Harry has been visiting regularly and changing Lloyd’s diapers, but as Harry starts to leave for the last time after telling Lloyd he won’t be able to visit anymore, Lloyd reveals that he has been faking for the entire 20 years, all for a gag. Soon after they leave the hospital together, the pair go to Harry’s parents’ house, and Harry finds, while looking through 20-year-old mail, that he has a daughter (and that he was accepted to Arizona State). Lloyd and Harry then embark on a journey to find Harry’s daughter, Penny, because Harry, with no other relatives to turn to is in desperate need of a kidney.
Even though the sequel is nowhere near as good as the original, it still has its funny moments. Such as whenever they leave Harry’s large cat, Butthole, in Billy’s (the blind kid in 4C, who now collects rare birds) apartment, and also when Lloyd and Harry take a bath in radioactive waste, among many other scenes. But it does also have its fair share of duds. Like the almost cringe-worthy “second most annoying sound in the world” scene. But the fact that they managed to hide Bill Murray in plain sight earns them an extra point or two.
Overall, I would say that the movie wasn’t bad, but it didn’t really live up to the hype, nor the legacy of the first “Dumb and Dumber.” It’s not a must-see, but if you’re a fan of the original it would be worth renting when it’s out in Redbox or Netflix. I would give it 6.7/10 stars.
