UT to host National Music Conference
The University of Tennessee will feature the 2014 Joint Regional Conference of The College Music Society Southern Chapter and Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and the Association of Technology in Music Instruction in the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center from Thursday, Feb. 13 to Saturday, Feb. 15.
“The University of Tennessee School of Music is pleased to host the 2014 Joint Conference,” David Royse, coordinator and associate professor of music education, said. “We are expecting about 150 college faculty members from throughout the United States to visit the newly opened Natalie L. Haslam Music Center. The conference will feature scholarly presentations and new music concerts.”
The Grand Opening will be on Thursday at 12 p.m. and will feature performances by UT Faculty members. On Friday, there will be a keynote address by Doc Severinsen, Grammy Award winner and longtime bandleader of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
“It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with the great Doc Severinsen,” Royse said. “He is an icon in the profession who has much wisdom to share about the current status of the music profession.”
Severinsen also judged the Doc Severinsen International Composition Contest, a competition for a new work for solo trumpet and wind ensemble or orchestra held to commemorate the opening of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center.The three winning compositions will be premiered during the conference on Friday at 8 p.m. in Cox Auditorium with renowned trumpeters Allen Vizzutti, Vince DiMartino, and Gabriel DiMartino performing with the UT Wind Ensemble and UT Orchestra, according to Royse.
