Tennessee soccer ties UMass 3-3

Coming off three straight wins, the No. 21 Lady Vols got their first tie of the season at UMass.

No. 21 Tennessee traveled to Massachusetts to face the UMass Minutewomen on Sunday in an attempt to stretch their win streak to 4 games.

Tennessee is coming off of a 3-1 win against Cincinnati last Sunday. This week, Tennessee went into an overtime thriller that ended in a draw.

Tennessee got on the board first with a free kick from freshman Sonia Ouchene Salón during the 36th minute for her second goal of the season. This score held going into halftime giving the Lady Vols a 1-0 lead.

Tennessee extended their lead to 2 with a penalty kick goal from senior MA Vignola during the 63rd.

This was quickly erased with two UMass goals just minutes later. Melissa Kössler scored off of a free kick in the 65th minute and Lauren Bonavita piled on with another goal a minute later.

Tennessee unknotted the tie and retook the lead with a second goal of the game from Vignola.

This was her fourth goal of the season coming in the 74th minute. Vignola lead the team in shots with 5 and shots on goal with 4.

However, in the 85th minute Kössler recorded her second goal of the night for UMass and her fifth of the season to tie the match back up with a 3-3 score line. This score would hold for the rest of the game resulting in a tie after two overtimes.

Tennessee’s record moves to 5-1-1 and UMass’ moves to 3-2-2.

Tennessee suffered from numerous infractions from the intensity of the match. The Lady Vols had 7 offsides compared to UMass’s 1. The Lady Vols also had 17 fouls, 2 yellow cards, and a red card.

Tennessee will take on UC Davis for their final non-conference game before kicking off their SEC schedule. The home game is scheduled at Regal Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
