Students “Slap the Rock” after first classes

Students and UT traditions welcomed a new year at the prominent landmark with t-shirts, popsicles and paint

The University of Tennessee’s Student Government Association (SGA) hosted the fourth annual “Slap the Rock” event on the first day of classes, Aug. 22. SGA’s traditions committee upheld this fairly new UT tradition.

Students left their marks on the Rock, an unmissable UT landmark often covered with messages from students, organizations and community members. For many Vols, painting the Rock is a rite of passage. Freshmen students found a tangible way to engage in UT traditions by leaving handprints on the Rock in orange paint.

Students met SGA members and enjoyed a cold popsicle in an attempt to create bonds among the UT community.

Before the event began at 5:00 p.m., students formed a line to receive commemorative t-shirts. SGA originally scheduled the event for Aug. 21, but rainy weather kept paint in cans and off the Rock until Wednesday evening.
