The first big move before the NBA trade deadline occurred today when former Vol Tobias Harris was traded to the Detroit Pistons.

Chris Broussard of ESPN reported earlier that the Orlando Magic had traded Harris to the Pistons in exchange for point guard Brandon Jennings and forward Ersan Ilyasova.

This is a questionable move for Orlando, who just re-signed Harris this summer to a four-year, $64 million contract. Detroit’s coach, Stan Van Gundy, now inherits that debt.

Harris is having a sub-par year, averaging 13.7 points and seven rebounds a game, but this move may be worth the risk. The Pistons are currently 27-27 and only half a game out of the last playoff spot, which is currently held by the Charlotte Hornets. With the addition of Harris, Detroit gets a valuable stretch player at the four position who will work well with Andre Drummond. Harris also has a decent jump shot and can put the ball on the floor when needed.

Harris and the Pistons will now look to make a playoff push behind their new starting lineup of Reggie Jackson, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Marcus Morris, Harris and Drummond.
