Opinion: Three keys for Vols victory against Gamecocks

Many Vol fans would agree that with four games left in the regular season, the game this weekend at South Carolina is a must-win.

Many Vol fans would agree that with four games left in the regular season, the game this weekend at South Carolina is a must-win. This game is the start of the final and easiest stretch of the Vol’s schedule. With that being said, it is imperative that Team 118 get the win this weekend in hopes of being one game closer to a 6-6 season that would make them bowl eligible.

A win this weekend would also change the way fans looked at the Tennessee-South Carolina rivalry. After last season’s upset by the Vols in Neyland, a win tomorrow could switch the dominance between the two teams and coaches to favor Jones. Three ingredients to producing a win this weekend is consistent quarterback play, strong defensive play and few penalties.

1. No matter what the status is on Worley, the start should go to sophomore Josh Dobbs. After relieving Nathan Peterman after just two series last weekend against Alabama, Dobbs showed poise and confidence in leading the offense. Both on the ground and in the air, Dobbs marched the team down the field multiple times against a very talented Alabama team. The new playbook implemented for him caused a veteran defense and a strong coaching staff to scratch their heads for three quarters.

2. Strong defensive play has been the story of the season for a Tennessee football team that has had a negative defensive reputation in the recent past. Creating stops will be crucial this weekend in attempts to keep the ball in the Vol offense’s hands as much as possible.

3. Penalties really haven’t been a large factor in the team’s play this season, but it is still a point to emphasize. This team can not afford to give up yardage due to penalties, so, as usual, it will be important for the Vols to stay ahead of the sticks in this one.
