If you are a student needing to de-stress in a creative and safe environment, then the Mahogany Soul Café is the place for you.  The Mahogany Soul Café is an open mic night open to all students that sign up.

Corey Hodge, Host and a junior studying Interdisciplinary programs with a minor in English, enjoys hosting the event. “Mahogany Soul is pretty much the type of venue where students are able to come after a long months’ worth of schooling and allow their creativity, stress and everything be released, said Hodge. “Students come in, and they can play music, they can sing, do poetry, rap, we’ve had Knoxville performers come, and just perform for everyone.”

Though the Café is only for the first 3 months of the fall semester, and the first 4 months of the spring semester at the end of each month it is a tradition that has been going on for more than eight years.  Students come back as often as they would like.

Whitney Wright a UT sophomore studying Anthropology and Pre-Med urges students to come out. “Definitely come,” said Wright. “You won’t be disappointed because there’s something that’s always there for everybody.  You might not expect a certain poem to speak to you.”

If you would like to be a performer for one of the last two performances of this semester or would like more information on the Mahogany Soul Cafe you can go to the Black Cultural Center and sign-up.
