The mood was excitedly tense at the Square Room Wednesday night, where five groups of musicians competed in the hopes of advancing to the final round of Knoxville's first Sound Off Battle of the Bands. The competition was tough, but The Songbirds emerged victorious.
No. 5 Tennessee won its 20th game of the season with a 74-57 win over SEC foe Arkansas. Kelley Cain led the Lady Vols with 14 points, 17 rebounds, and eight blocks.
Sophomore Scotty Hopson hit a go-ahead jump shot in the final 20 seconds to give Bruce Pearl and the No. 14 Volunteers a 61-60 win over the Florida Gators. The win moved the Vols into sole possession of third place in the SEC East, just a game back of co-leaders Kentucky and Vanderbilt.
The College of Communication and Information held the grand opening of the new Scripps Convergence Lab on Jan 29. The lab is available to all students of the college and offers computers, cameras, a study area and much more.
More than 1,000 crazed hockey fans braved the snow to watch the Knoxville Ice Bears host the Louisiana Ice Gators. The Ice Bears scored first and never looked back winning 6-2. Goalie Chad Collins had a strong showing in his Ice Bears debut, before his back-up Andrew Gallant entered the game and fought with Louisiana's goalie at center ice. A black Toyota Camry struck three UT students Friday afternoon while traveling northeast at full speed on Volunteer Blvd. Two students sustained moderate to severe injuries from the accident and the third walked away from the scene of the collision.
After struggling offensively the past few games, Pat Summitt and the No. 5 Lady Vols used a school record of 13 three-pointers to beat out Auburn 85-56. Four Lady Vols had double-digit scoring efforts, led by Angie Bjorklund's 20 points.
Jermaine Beal scored 25 points, including 23 during Vanderbilt's 54-point second half, to lead the Commodores to an 85-76 road win over Tennessee Wednesday night.
