The Tennessee Lady Vols softball team was led by Madison Shipman’s two homeruns and Ivy Renfroe’s four shutout innings in a dominating 8-0 victory over Winthrop Wednesday.
“I was seeing the ball really well today,” said Shipman, who finished the day with three hits, two of which were homeruns, along with five RBIs.
The Lady Vols opened the game with a single from Raven Chavanne. The next batter, Lauren Gibson, sent both around the bases as she hammered a two-run shot over the left field wall to give UT a 2-0 advantage.
Madison Shipman kept the scoring going with a solo homerun on the first pitch she saw.
Not even an inning later, Shipman found herself rounding the bases again knocking out a first pitch two-run homerun driving in Chavanne.
The Lady Vols bats went quiet for an inning only to be ignited again by the top of the order.
The fourth inning started with a Chavanne walk followed by back to back doubles by Gibson and Shipman. Cheyanne Tarango drove in Shipman on a RBI single.
The Lady Vols finished the game with eight runs on nine hits.
Ivy Renfroe pitched very well for UT, as she delivered four shutout innings giving up three hits while striking out four of 13 batters. Cheyanne Tarango finished the game in the circle, tossing one inning recording two strikeouts.
Co-head coach Karen Weekly was very delighted at her team’s performance.
“I was pleased how the girls came out and took care of business today,” said Weekly.
Weekly also stressed to the players of what happened last year against Winthrop and warned them not to overlook them.
“You have to take every game seriously,” said Weekly.
Ivy Renfroe was informed of great news just prior to the game as she was named Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week and the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week.
Renfroe was asked what the award meant to her and she stated, “You cannot get caught up with honors like this even though they are great honors.”
UT is back on the road this weekend as they travel to Gainesville, Fla., where they will face the No. 4 Gators. All games will be televised. Friday’s game will air on Sun Sports/Fox Sports Florida, Saturday’s on ESPNU, and Sunday’s on Fox Sports Net.
