Tennessee 73, Mississippi 60, End of Second Half
End of Game (8:59 p.m.): Slowly, yet surely, the Vols took over the second half and extended the lead, thanks to 16-21 shooting from the free throw line after the 1-5 first half performance. After the Rebels threatened in the late stages, Tennessee iced the game inside with defense and execution. The defense forced 11 turnovers, while committing only one second half turnover on offense. After the hot start, Ole Miss shot just 18-48 for the rest of the game. The Vols improve to 15-13, 7-6 in the SEC, which is good for sole possession of fourth place in the SEC. Ole Miss falls to 15-12, 5-8 in the SEC and will need some help in order to survive in the SEC race. Tennessee will travel to Columbia on Saturday for a game against South Carolina at Colonial Life Arena at 8 p.m.
Tennessee 63, Mississippi 55, 3:28 Second Half
8:48 p.m.: The Rebels scored four points on one trip to close the lead to eight, led by Summers' four quick points. Maymon has knocked down some free throws to extend the lead. Holloway has fouled out of the game for Mississippi, the first of many Rebels in the foul trouble category. The back-and-forth scoring is in the favor of Tennessee for now, but Ole Miss is sticking around heading into the final frame of play.
Tennessee 56, Mississippi 44, 7:40 Second Half
8:39 p.m.: Maymon has received a lot more inside touches this half and the forward has been a bigger presence, already with eight boards. The rebounding differential is now nine in favor of Big Orange and the Vols have four players now in double figures, compared to Ole Miss's two. The Rebels have only managed 13 points this half so far.
Tennessee 50, Mississippi 42, 9:49 Second Half
8:31 p.m.: The pace of this game has taken a much slower route the last few minutes. Golden is responsible for four Tennessee points. McRae went on to add another basket, a dunk that could, or should, be considered one of the top dunks of the year so far. Off of a missed lay-up, Golden fed the ball to Maymon, who passed it to McRae for a flying tomahawk. Could be better than Scotty Hopson's duo of dunks against South Carolina last year? Top ten worthy, for sure.
Tennessee 41, Mississippi 35, 15:21 Second Half
8:19 p.m.: UT has made an effort to pound the paint, as early baskets by Stokes and Maymon have gotten the Vols off to a better start than the first half. Maymon is the first player in double figures with 10 and Tatum's second three of the game has the Vols on an early 9-2 run out of the gate. The Vols are able to run what they want to and have been able to crack the Rebel D for the most part. On top of that, Smokey just wiggled in a speedo with the Dance Team to "Sexy and I know it."
Tennessee 30, Mississippi 31, End of First Half
Halftime (8:04 p.m.): Tennessee started off very slowly, falling behind by 13 early, but solid defense and accurate shooting have the Vols to within a point at halftime. The two teams are pretty evenly matched on the floor and the statistics are no difference. Both teams have 13 made field goals, but the Vols are 1-5 from the charity stripe, while Ole Miss is 5-7 from the line. The Vols hole a 20-15 rebounding edge and the hustle and physical play has four Rebels with two fouls each. Freshman Jelan Kendrick has been the difference in the game so far, leading Mississippi with 10 points off the bench, the only player in double figures so far.
Tennessee Leaders
J. Maymon: 8 points, 3 rebounds
J. McRae: 7 points, 5 rebounds
D. Miller: 7 points, 5 rebounds
Mississippi Leaders
J. Kendrick: 10 points, 2 rebounds
M. Holloway: 9 points, 2 rebounds
T. Henry: 8 points, 3 rebounds
Tennessee 25, Mississippi 23, 3:51 First Half
7:42 p.m.: The Vols took their first lead of the game on a McRae lay-up, extending their 19-3 run. The sophomore has made three lay-ups when fouled, but has converted only one three-point play. Defensively, Tennessee has forced five Ole Miss turnovers and has a six-rebound advantage. The Vols, however, have turned the ball over nine times already, leading to seven Rebel points off of turnovers and keeping them in the game.
Tennessee 16, Mississippi 17, 7:07 First Half
7:32 p.m.: Dwight Miller is taking advantage of his playing time. The native of the Bahamas is leading the Vols with seven points, including a three-pointer. Tennessee is currently on a 14-3 run to pull within a point and almost cancel out the early Rebel run. Ole Miss has shot just 1-10 from the floor since the 14:04 mark.
Tennessee 8, Mississippi 15, 10:54 First Half
7:24 p.m.: The Vols have clawed back into the game, using multiple plays from the bench. Jordan McRae and Dwight Miller have each scored a basket, cutting the deficit to seven. Ole Miss has gone 0-4 in this segment, thanks to tougher Tennessee defense and tougher overall shots.
Tennessee 2, Mississippi 14, 14:04 First Half
7:13 p.m.: The Vols have started off cold from the floor, taking almost three minutes to score their first basket and shooting just 1-8 from the floor. The Rebels, meanwhile, have started 7-8 from the floor and jumped out to an 14-2 run. Henry has eight points and Holloway has six points already and the tough Rebel defense has closed down the interior, forcing UT into some tough shots.
6:50 p.m.: The lineups have been announced on the scoreboard. Starting for Tennessee: Jarnell Stokes, Jeronne Maymon, Trae Golden, Skylar McBee and Cameron Tatum. Starting for Mississippi: Jarvis Summers, Nick Williams, Terrance Henry, Murphy Holloway and Demarco Cox.
Pregame: It's the second-to-last home game of the year, Vol fans! After losing a tough game in Tuscaloosa to Alabama on Saturday, Tennessee is back in action tonight, facing another former SEC West opponent in the Rebels of Mississippi. Despite the 62-50 loss, UT has won four of their last five contests overall and return home, where they have won ten of the last eleven contests. UT has a 68-38 lead in the overall series and won last year's meeting in Oxford, 74-57.
As much success as UT has had recently, the Rebels are in the middle of a rough stretch. Ole Miss has lost five of its last seven games, with its last win coming Feb. 11 vs. Auburn (61-54). Many of these games have been close, but the last two have not been so close. After the Auburn win, Vanderbilt won a 26-point runaway in Oxford and Kentucky handed the Rebels a 15-point loss. The Rebels are very much alive in the SEC race for the coveted fourth spot. They sit at 15-11 (5-7 SEC) and play fellow contenders LSU, Alabama and Arkansas in the final three games. Senior Terrance Henry leads the team with 11.7 points per game and is 24 points away from 1,000 on his career.
Meanwhile, the Vols are continuing to play without the services of the suspended Kenny Hall, but appears to be alright without him for the time being. Jordan McRae has been a huge factor off the bench, scoring in double figures four out of the last seven games. Overall, the bench has been a huge part for the Vols, outscoring the opponents' bench by 9.1 points per game in SEC play. UT's bench has outscored the opponents' bench in 16 of the last 19 games.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. here in Knoxville and coverage is available on the Vols Radio Network or on Comcast Sports Southeast.
