Professor Maxine Burkett, from the University of Hawaii, will appear on Skype and give the presentation “The Nation Ex-Situ: On Climate Change, Deterritorialized Nationhood and the Post-Climate Era” on Thursday Feb. 23. The event will take place in the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy located at 1640 Cumberland Avenue. She will speak from 3:30-5 p.m.
The lecture is the second in a series of lectures hosted by the Baker Center staff. All students, particularly those interested in the science of climate change, are invited to attend.
“The lecture series is designed to bring all students, staff, and faculty across campus,” Assistant Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Paul Armsworth, said.
Burkett will discuss a variety of issues, including the notion of a “post-climate” era, international laws in a “post-climate” world, as well as the very future of the nation-states. Currently, there is no existing international legal structure for climate change.
“She will talk about an international legal framework for climate change,” Dr. Armsworth said. “Sea level lines, legal waters, as well as the aspects of legal problems will also be addressed.”
Students who attend the lecture will learn the effects of climate change on the country, as well as the future international legal structure that may be required when the changes create problems.
