The University of Tennessee debate team became state champions in debate sweepstakes, their third state title in three years, last Saturday, Feb. 18 at a tournament held at Tennessee Tech University.
UT also won third place in overall sweepstakes at the tournament.
The debates covered a variety of controversial questions including whether or not libraries should filter pornographic content, government monitoring of social networks and if the terrorists have won.
The debaters didn't know which side of the argument they would be on until 15 minutes before the round began.
Nathan Johnston, president of the debate team, was awarded the title of State Champion Varsity Parliamentary Debate Speaker.
"The competition is fun but it's almost a by-product," Johnston explained. "It's about doing something we like."

They hold monthly debates in the Baker Center. There plan for next month is to bring city council members to the Baker Center to discuss issues that affect the UT community, but are rarely talked about with students.
The UT debate team does not have a coach and does not currently receive any funding from the university. The team raises all its funds on its own through dues and fundraising.
Last month, UT held a debate tournament of their own. Eleven schools from four states attended and they plan to expand next year.
UT is the only student-run team in the country to host a tournament, Johnston said.
Debate team members are seeking sponsors in the Knoxville community. Marcos Garza, an attorney for a downtown law firm, helped the team get closer to their goal by writing them a check for $1500.
They have been offered a free trip to Nationals in Huntsville, Texas this April because they are willing to help spread a form of one-on-one debate known as International Public Debate Association (IPDA) Parliamentary Debate.
The debate team is currently accepting members. Prospective members need only show up to the Tuesday night meetings at 6 p.m. in the Humanities and Social Sciences building, or email Nathan Johnston at njohnst4@utk.edu for more information.
