A Knoxville non-profit organization, Progressive Media, and its two radio stations Faith 1240 am and Victory 92.7 fm, work to help the community.
From running free commercials for local church events, to giving away prizes to listeners, Progressive Media offers music from popular Christian artists and messages from Christian pastors from all around the country to its listeners.
With television and internet in almost every home, radio may seem to be a declining media, but there are some who don't believe so. Barry Culberson, president of Progressive Media and a local pastor, knows just how important radio can be.
"We do as much as possible to spread the good news," Culberson said.
The station is located in Knoxville inside the Knoxville Christian Center and has eight people who keep it running. Brian Brooks, 29, handles not just radio promotions, but he is also the first person to reach in case of equipment issues.
"I feel that everything I've done in my life, has prepared me for here," Brooks said. Brooks is a graduate of the University of Tennessee where he majored in sport and event management."We do as much as possible to spread the good news," Pastor Barry Culberson
Culberson says he wants Progressive Media to promote not just its radio stations but also to help churches and other local charities spread news about any events they may be having -- and they do it all for free.
"We're listener supported, so we wouldn't be around if we weren't doing something right," Culberson said.
Chuck Lester, the radio manager who also is the head of Chi Alpha Campus Ministries on the UT campus, said he can see the impact of one job on the other.
"I hear a good report from the students in Chi Alpha about the radio station," Lester said. "They really enjoy it."
The two radio stations also air family-friendly material and popular Christian programming including the Doug and Kim Morning Show and the Rick and Bubba Show. The Doug and Kim Morning Show, based in Nashville, can be heard weekday mornings from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. The Rick and Bubba Show is based in Alabama, but is heard on radio stations across the country from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Culberson's wife, Dottie, is host of Dottie's Lunchtime Drive, a very popular local radio show airing 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Faith 1240 features nationally renowned pastors, including John Hagee, Joyce Meyer and Charles Stanley. Also Faith 1240 promotes local pastors by airing sermons by Tod Zeiger of Embassy Christian Center and Culberson.
Victory 92.7 is the music station. Throughout the day, it plays current top Christian music from artists like TobyMac, Phillips, Craig and Dean and Francessca Battistelli.
Progressive Media wants to continue working in the community for as long as they can. Culberson believes that one day they will be able to have stations to cover all of East Tennessee.
"Radio is and always will be a vital part of media," Brooks said. "We are proud to do the work we do everyday."
