The Victoria and Albert Museum offers so many different exhibits that it is hard to decide where to start first. If visitors want to see every last piece, it would take 15 years (not including bathroom breaks).
Currently, one of the most popular galleries is the fashion area containing the exhibit Grace Kelly; Style Icon. Running through Sept. 26, a small collection of Grace Kelly's dresses, acting memorabilia and photos are on display. Kelly is known for her films in the '50s such as High Society with Bing Crosby and her 1955 Oscar performance in To Catch a Thief.
Kelly's photos are a montage to her extremely stylish life while married to Prince Rainier of Monaco. Items on display include classic Christian Dior and Chanel suits, a collage of Cat Eye vintage sunglasses and the now infamous Hermes "Kelly" bag that still has a wait list. Balenciaga, Yves St Laurent and Givenchy haute couture gowns sprinkle the collection as well.
"Visitors came in complete medieval ensembles, from corsets to masks. The men even wore tights," Nash, V&A Tour GuideFriday nights at the museum offer gallery specials, introductory tours, National Video Archive Films, evening concerts from the Royal College of Music, art lecturers and a DJ and drinks special in the Grand Entrance.
The last Friday of every month is individually themed. Nash, a V&A tour guide and artist, said his favorites had been the Halloween Ball and the Renaissance Fair, when the museum had 5,000 attendants.
"Visitors came in complete medieval ensembles, from corsets to masks. The men even wore tights," he said.
Victoria and Albert also aims to educate its guests and offers evenings with inspirational writers, designers, historians and architects talking about their work. Summer school courses are offered from how to make high society scarves to seminars on 20th century furniture.
From Raphael's cartoons to arts of Asia, everyone can find an interesting display. With all the beauty and sensational history, one can see why the Victoria and Albert Museum has stayed open all these years. When visiting London, it is a must see.
