The Study Abroad Fair, hosted at the University Center Wednesday, was a helpful resource for students interested in studying abroad.

The fair had many former study abroad students available to discuss options of studying outside of the U.S. along with outside organizations that act as liaisons between the students and the universities.

Each semester many students leave Knoxville to pursue education in another country. With the study abroad options available at UT, many students can go abroad while still having their federal aid and other scholarships apply.

"College is a great time to study abroad," Bryant Rosenwinkel, of IES Abroad, said.

Rosenwinkel spoke of the range of educational diversity offered. With just about any major here at UT a program can be found for either fall, spring or summer.

Of the students here at UT who have studied abroad, most of them have loved their experiences. Students can choose from many different countries to study abroad, as well as circumnavigating the globe with the semester at sea program.

Being outside of your own comfort level will show you things about yourself, things that will surprise you.
Sarah Webb, of Academic Programs International

Sarah Webb, of Academic Programs International, mentioned how important it is to find the program that fits you and your interests. The availability of the different programs allows people to find what suits them best.

Even if students missed the fair, there are many other ways to learn about the programs offered. The Programs Abroad Web site is created specifically so students can learn more about the programs offered, as well as link directly to information about outside agencies.

Even though the application process can seem daunting at times, the general consensus is that students find the process worth it as soon as they step off the plane.

Rita Spellings, a sophomore in sports management, studied at Cambridge University in 2009 and loved her experience.

"It was fabulous," she said.

Kelsey Cunningham, who also studied in Cambridge, said she enjoyed her experience so much, she is planning a return trip. She is currently looking to study abroad again - this time, in New Zealand.

"I wished I would've gone for longer; definitely do it," Brian Hughes, a former study abroad student, said.

Studying abroad is a way to immerse yourself in an entirely new culture, and present yourself with opportunities and experiences you may not find in the U.S.

"Being outside of your own comfort level will show you things about yourself, things that will surprise you," said Webb.

I truly believe in studying abroad, not only for language, but also for a different view of culture and a different perspective on life.
