Knoxville Area Transit is planning on installing GPS systems in local and campus buses. KAT is currently in the process of finding a GPS provider that can cater to their specialized needs.

Over the next ten months we'll be putting GPS tracking systems in buses and there will be a Web-based UT map that students can go on to track buses.  Belinda Brill, Director of KAT Media Relations

"Over the next ten months we'll be putting GPS tracking systems in buses and there will be a Web-based UT map that students can go on to track buses," said Belinda Brill, Director of KAT Media Relations.

Belinda also said that a second phase to the project will allow "push notifications" to cell phones when buses are expected to arrive.

GPS will add several major benefits for passengers. Bus stops will be equipped with signs to tell passengers the projected arrival time for the buses based on their real-time location. Also, passengers will have the ability to go online and see a live map or current bus positions.
