Super Bowl ads worth the hype?

The Super Bowl is over and the New Orleans Saints won. Now the real question emerges: what was the best commercial?

CBS sold over sixty slots for advertisements charging around $3 million for a 30 minute slot. That doesn't factor in the cost of producing the commercials, which can really ad up. The new question: is all the money worth it?

The Doritos commercial with the little boy talking with his mother's date was the best commercial of the Super Bowl. It was the best commercial and "made me want to eat some Doritos," Casi Blade, a sophomore, said.

"Keep your hands off my mama and keep your hands off my Doritos" was a catchy and hilarious slogan for the Doritos Company that will undoubtedly last for a long time. Keep your hands off my mama and keep your hands off my Doritos.

"That little kid was adorable," said Scotti Klecka, a freshman.

A common theme among commercials this year was men walking around without their pants on. Bridgestone tires, Careerbuilders.com and Coca-cola all contributed to the anti-pants movement. Could the hit summer movie The Hangover have anything to do with this trend? Come on boys, put some pants on. No one wants to see that.

The Snickers commercial with Betty White being tackled was funny; however, the funniest commercials were the E-trade commercials with the adorable babies.

"I liked the baby ones the best," said Shannon Brown, a sophomore.

The ads steadily get worse in the third quarter and thankfully, pick back up for the fourth quarter with a precious Anheuser-Busch ad, a Taco Bell commercial with Lakers' player Lamar Odom, funnier Doritos ads and cute E-trade commercials.

The Super Bowl wouldn't be complete without "hot" Godaddy.com ads staring Danica Patrick. The Bud Light ads were entertaining as well, especially the commercial with T Pain.

But are the Super Bowl commercials worth all the hype? Sure, some of them are funny, but they are still commercials and people tend to ignore them after a while.

The commercials start to run together and if no one remembers them, it is definitely not worth the money. The Sketchers Shape-Ups commercials were short and forgettable. The monster.com and Papa John's commercials were disappointing too.

The Dove for men ad was "one of the creepiest commercials ever," Blade said. At least creepy is still memorable, so was it effective? In a word, yes. Super Bowl commercials have taken on a life of their own and are just as much a part of the Super Bowl experience.

"Now people watch the Super Bowl just to watch the commercials," Kristina Carrodeguas, a sophomore, said. "The Super Bowl is probably one of the most watched events on TV, so it is probably worth it."

The Super Bowl ads featured celebrities like Danica Patrick, Lance Armstrong, Brett Favre, and Betty White among many others.
