The Tennessee Theatre presents Gaetano Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14.
The opera is inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor.
Performed by the Knoxville Opera, Lucia di Lammermoor is based on a Scottish myth of cursed lovers. Feuding families fuel the tragedy as Lucia is denied her true love, her family's enemy, Edgardo. She then finds herself arranged to marry a man that will give her family long awaited prosperity. In turn, Lucia reacts and suffers the consequences.
Donizetti’s tragedy is famous for the “Mad Scene,” a breakthrough piece for many sopranos.
Lucia di Lammermoor is performed in Italian with projected English translations.
The tragedy will feature Rachele Gilmore as Lucia. Gilmore performed at the Metropolitan Opera recently, hitting the highest notes ever by a soprano. The cast also includes Knoxville Opera favorites Dinyar Vania, Nelson Martinez and Andrew Wentzel.
Tickets are on sale by phone and online through the Knoxville Opera. Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Maestro Salesky will provide an onstage opera preview 45 minutes prior to each performance.
