The Twilight series has been an astonishing hit among teens and young adults, resulting in two hit films and described by the Wall Street Journal as the successor to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Stephenie Meyer's other novel, The Host, is aimed at a more adult audience and seems to be overlooked by her large Twilight fan base.
Before releasing her last book of the series, Breaking Dawn, Meyer released The Host, a science fiction novel. According to USA Today, The Host is ranked at number 86 on the best-seller list, while Meyer's third book of the Twilight series, Eclipse, is at number 2. The rest of the series follows with New Moon at 3, Twilight at 4 and Breaking Dawn at number 5.
On her official Web site, Meyer describes her novel as "science fiction for people who don't like science fiction." In an exclusive interview with Meyer, sponsored by Barnes and Noble, Meyer explains why her novel should not be considered a typical "sci-fi" book and tells her viewers why it can still entice the fans of the Twilight series.
"[The Host] gives a similar experience to the Twilight saga... it's still a story based on the characters. It's about the love story, and about what it means to be human, rather than being a science fiction novel about ray guns and space ships."
It's about the love story, and about what it means to be human, rather than being a science fiction novel about ray guns and space ships. Stephenie Meyer, authorAlthough her novel has yet to equal the Twilight series in popularity, Meyer remains optimistic that her novel will eventually gain a Twilight sized fan base. "I'm hoping that people will still feel the same draw to the characters and the same concern for their well-being that they do with the Twilight characters."
The author explains why her obsession with love stories that is so evident in the Twilight series is also obvious in The Host, describing her novel as "the first love triangle with only 2 bodies involved." Meyer portrays an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" style effect by presenting the two main characters as sharing the same body.
Twilight fanatic, Haley Huber, explained why Twilight followers should be open-minded to Meyer's other novel.
"Many people who do not like other vampire stories still loved the Twilight series and were fascinated with the characters. This should stay true with The Host because although it is considered a science fiction book Meyer still presents captivating characters that will intrigue any kind of reader just like the Twilight series has done."
Meyer's Web site announced on Sept. 23 that a movie version of The Host is in the works. UT junior, Lauren Gennett, explained why she thinks a film will increase the popularity of the novel.
"I think the main reason the Twilight books became so popular was after the release of the first movie. Maybe after a film version of The Host is released, more people will become interested in reading the book. It's all about the 'hype'."
Several UT students gave their insight on Stephenie Meyers' novels. They answered in-depth questions and gave their opinion on whether Meyer's aliens will eventually gain the popularity her vampires have.
