Although watermelons are out of season, every September the men of Lambda Chi Alpha have a blast with its Watermelon Bust event.
This year the festivities will kick off on Sept. 28. The fraternity hopes all the sororities will come out and help support its cause.
We are going to push harder and ask for everyone's support since this is such a great cause. Our philanthropy means so much to us. Jock Lillard, vice president of Lamba Chi Alpha
Throughout the week, each sorority is invited to come and decorate the fraternity houses with signs and banners. Through this, the houses are turned into a rainbow of colors and different Greek letters.
The philanthropy week comes to a close with field day events. This includes watermelon relays, eating contests, watermelon tosses and the infamous Slip 'n Slide.
Last year the fraternity donated more than $3,000.
This year they are hoping to double this number, according to Jock Lillard, vice president.
"We are going to push harder and ask for everyone's support since this is such a great cause," Lillard said. "Our philanthropy means so much to us."
Lillard also mentioned this is the 16th year the men have organized the event.
"It is one of our most famous traditions here at UT," he noted.
Donations for St. Jude's are greatly appreciated.
The fraternity will also be purchasing around 300 watermelons for the weekly events.
