UT will celebrate the start of National Campus Safety Awareness Month with its annual Safety Day on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
UT is in its second year of partnership with Security On Campus Inc., a national non-profit organization whose goal is to prevent substance abuse, violence and other offenses on college campuses. Many other colleges and universities across the U.S. are also teaming up with the group.
The safety of our students, faculty and staff is a key priority for the university. Maxine Davis, UT Dean of Students An opening ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on the Pedestrian Walkway. UT Police Department Interim Chief Debbie Perry; Security On-Campus Director of Public Policy S. Daniel Carter; and UT Dean of Students Maxine Davis will address students and faculty.
"We want to help the members of our campus community make informed decisions and play an active role in improving our campus environment," Davis said.
Afterward, members of UT Police and UT's Safety, Environment and Education center will be available to speak with individuals and answer questions regarding safety. Students, faculty and staff can also take advantage of the property engraving station, DUI goggle demonstrations and UT ALERT registration booth.
Across campus, tents staffed by UT Police, faculty, staff, students and neighborhood representatives will offer important information about campus safety resources and personal safety advice. Additionally, they will be distributing free food and prizes.
"The safety of our students, faculty and staff is a key priority for the university," Davis said. "This day brings our community together to emphasize the many resources and tools with the hope that they will take advantage of them."
