Operation Broken Silence is hosting a poker fundraiser for Africa on Sept. 26 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Hess Hall courtyard around the back.
The major activities OBS have planned for the Texas-Hold-'Em-Night are a classic game of Texas Hold 'Em, a short discussion after the winner donates his or her prize and a question and answer period.
Every dollar counts to these people who are afflicted with sickness, starvation and AIDS. Mark Hackett, founder and president of Operation Broken Silence "Every dollar counts to these people who are afflicted with sickness, starvation and AIDS," Mark Hackett, founder and president of Operation Broken Silence, said. "By just showing up and playing a game of cards, you can feed a family and provide medicine for sick people with completely treatable illnesses."
The buy-in for the game is $10 and all proceeds will go to aid for Africa. This buy-in not only provides money for a good cause, but it also provides food and snacks from Hackett, a former culinary arts student.
“With how good this cause is and what good it can do, we hope we’re going to have a huge turn out," Hackett said. "I know it sounds kind of lame to come to a non-party event on a Saturday night in college, but there are a bunch of people that enjoy many of the events being put on here. If everything sounds like fun, and it’s such a small price to pay, why not give it a try? Think of the good you can do."
UT student Katie Mars said if you’re deciding what to do on Saturday night, coming to the benefit poker game will be really fun.
“Don’t be a square and come on out. It’s going to be awesome and we’re starting a revolution, one cent at a time. You for sure won’t regret it,” she said
