This is a big game for both Tennessee and South Carolina. Tennessee wants to pull even at 4-4 while the Gamecocks are looking to get into a new year's day bowl.
7:45 Black Jerseys. That is all.
8:00 - The play-action trick from Jonathan Crompton to fullback Austin Johnson led to Tennessee treats.
8:21 - Tennessee's offense is already clicking and the two touchdowns came with relative ease. The defense is playing tough even though defensive end Chris Walker is sidelined for the game. If the Gamecocks want to stay in the game they will need to get pressure on Crompton because he looks like, well, like the Crompton of the last two games.
8:35 - At the end of the first quarter Tennessee has looked good and I'm not just talking about the black jerseys. Tennessee's 14 first quarter points are more than half of their total first quarter points for the first seven games. They scored 27 total first quarter points heading into the South Carolina game.
8:48 - Three South Carolina fumbles have led to three Tennessee touchdowns. This is looking more and more like a blowout game. Tennessee is playing with a lot of swagger and the Gamecocks are playing poor. This could be a long night. Zac Ellis of the Daily Beacon just pointed out the last time SC was in Knoxville they were down 21-0 to come back and force overtime, so this may not be over yet.
9:02 - South Carolina continues to shoot themselves in the foot and the Vols continue to take advantage. If the Gamecocks want to get back in the game they have to make Tennessee earn their points and get more stops on third down. The black jerseys are growing on me.
9:14 - Special teams bad, penalties good. after gaining 137 yards in the first quarter, Tennessee has netted only 60 yards in the second. Safety Janzen Jackson dressed up for Halloween as Eric Berry the way he is hitting people. Tennessee just recorded their first sack since the Florida game.
9:40 - The Vols only have 27 more yards than South Carolina after two quarters. For the Gamecocks to get back in the game they need to force turnovers and score points. Pretty simple plan, but they did the exact opposite in the first half.
10:00 - Tennessee's offense seems to have gone back into hiding for the night while the Gamecocks are beginning to show life. Tennessee needs to find its grove to put this game away. Art Evans is a bad cornerback, he's been getting outplayed all night.
10:18 - Janzen Jackson continues to blow people up and Art Evans continues to be a bad cornerback. I'm not really sure why Marsalous Johnson isn't the starter. On another note, Montario Hardesty is on pace for another 100 yard game. It's 28-6 and it's over. (Right when I typed the period SC scores on a touchdown pass.)
10:31 - It's the end of the third quarter and Tennessee needs one more score to really put it out of reach. Two Vol linebackers have been injured and they really can't take any more hits at that position. That might put two freshmen with Rico McCoy if the injuries are serious.
10:46 - Tennessee won this game in the first 17 minutes of the game, forcing three South Carolina fumbles and scoring touchdowns on all three ensuing drives. All that is left is for Tennessee to run out the clock. Hardesty has over 100 yards on the night. It's the New Bern, N.C. native's third 100 yard game of the year.
11:02 - Chad Cunningham just made a 39 yard field goal, ending Tennessee's streak of three blocked kicks. They still need to improve on special teams if they want to win the rest of their games this season.
