On Saturday, Oct. 24, the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary
Medicine will be hosting a Howl-O-Ween Dog Jog. The event will be held from 3:00
to 6:00 p.m. at Adair Park in Knoxville.
Bring your dog and participate in mini races, agilities and bobbing for apples. You and your dog can enter the costume contest with categories of funniest, scariest, and owner-dog look alike.
The main event is the Dog Jog. Prior to attending the event, sign up for how many miles you plan to do, but save the last mile for the event. For example, if you sign up to do 20 miles of walking your dog, complete 19 of them before and do the last mile with your dog along with others at the Dog Jog.
"Over 50 percent of animals suffer from being overweight. Animals, like humans, can suffer from diabetes and heart attacks," Ashley Ellis, a UT veterinary science major, said.
At the Howl-O-Ween Dog Jog participants can learn if your animal is overweight or even underweight. You can also learn about diets for your dogs and get some good exercise in for your animal.
The event is free and the public is invited to attend with their dogs to win free prizes and giveaways. Registration is required for the Dog Jog with a form available online.
"The Howl-O-Ween Dog Jog is a great way to raise awareness of obesity among animals," Ellis said. "Pet owners can learn how they are harming their animals by feeding them table scraps and dog treats, all while having fun and getting some good exercise in for the day."
